The contributions of women have been great in the Indian National movements. Women participated in every movements with full heart and soul. They put their aspirations and decisions in the nation building. First time they got opportunity of coming out home, got together, participated and rallied with our nationalist leaders against the British government.
Unlike other countries, Indian women and their contributions are highly appreciated and never ignored the contributions made by them, they walked with the male counterparts. Never ever during movements, women were prevented by any groups, even daughters, wives of the leaders were encouraged.
Our Indian culture has been a rich since ancient times. Women were highly appreciated and had contributed in the making of Rigveda. The society was matriarchy. But slow and gradually, the status of women reduced in the later Vedic period.
The participation of women in the national movements become easy because Mahatma Gandhi was considered as a saint and the national movements as a religious battle. The nature of Mahatma Gandhi like a saint, created a new moral and politics of the movements. It left the impression in the minds of common. Patriotic feelings considered as a religion. Bharat Mata was personified as a fimale figure attracted more women to join the Indian politics.
People had a wrong assumption about women that, they took care houses and childrens and engaged in the domestic chores, women's life is restricted to home only. But on the call of Mahatma Gandhi, sarojini Naidu, women came out home, participated and rallied around the leaders against the British government.
The contribution of women can be seen when Gandhi ji call to boycott foreign goods and picked liquor shops.
Gandhiji always wanted to see women as parallel to male, no one should lack behind in the development.
In year 1921, women clamped Hartal throughout Maharashtra on the arrival of Prince of Wales. Inspired from Gandhi ji, they opened a number of schools for girl child and women. Women collected 44 thousands rupees for the Tilak fund.
In 1930, 400 hundreds women were arrested due to protesting against the election at the Bombay election booth.
In the 20th century, a number of women organizations set up like Desh Sewika Sangh, Nari Satyagrah Samiti, Mahila Rastriya Sangh, Ladies picketing Board, Stree Swaraj Sangha and Swayam Sewika Sangha took Hartal, processions and protests in the national movements.
