US vetoed in UNSC | Israel and Philistine | the changing world order

US vetoed in UNSC | Israel and Philistine | the changing world order

All we know the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7, when a volley of rockets strike and rocked Israel, in response to this act Israel declared war and ordered Gazans to take shelters in South Gaza in order to crackdown on Hamas, an Iran backed outfit.

In this battle several thousands people including children, old age men, women and physically impaired lost their lives, a truce of ceasefire did big work for a time being, helped in freeing of hostages and releasing of Philistines prisoners from the Israeli prison in exchange.

On 12 of December the UNGA adopted a resolution for on immediate ceasefire in the Israel- Hamas conflict. 153 nations voting in favour of resolution while 10 countries against the resolution and 23 abstaining from voting. India, first time voted in favour which advocates immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds because so many people including children and women are killing everyday.  Actually all the members of the UNO are the members of the UNGA, and a resolution requires simple majority to pass it. Here simple majority implies halves of the total present members. And the decision is not legally binding.

The UN is the ultimate body which was built and designed to serve for the specific purposes after the WW II. The world was facing a lot of problems including economic, socially, financially, politically, etc to counter all these problems and devise ways to overcome the UNO was formed. The makers of the UNO had contributed huge funds and place effective leadership to make the body more powerful. Currently the US has vetoed against the resolution and its stand/stake is very clear, it supports the acts of Israel. Many countries criticised the move of the US.

However, the UNGA adopted the resolution, there is another exclusive body of UN called United Nation Security Council (UNSC) where the US vetoed the resolution. It has five permanent members called P5 countries namely the US, the UK, France, Russia and China. And there are 10 another non-permanent members are elected for 2 years. The decision taken by the P5 is legally binding

Binding and Not Binding nature of decision

Here contradicts arises and always irked many who believe in democracy. Once the US vetoed against the resolution the resolution become zero have no means. What did with the resolution passed with heavy votes in United Nations General Assembly?. . So here the value of UNGA comes out with 153 votes went into vein and it was just a mockery of global opinion, if any one of the elite exclusive P5 members vetoed it. The rule of veto is very simple any resolution finally requires assent of all five members and the resolution failed to pass in the UNSC if any one of members vetoed it. So the UNSC failed to abide with the democratic principles.

Need to change in the structure of UNSC

1. All the five members of the P5 are almost developed countries and it undermine the rights and voices of developing countries and least developed countries, they are also part of the world and by decision making process they should have equal say.

2. The changing of world order requires new set of model  by re framing of UNSC structure and should  include new members from developing countries or to increase the members in the rotational basis.

3. They should have a democratic way to run any international organisation.

Conclusion.

The UNO was founded aims to bring peace and stability in the world. There are diverse issues in the world require drawing attention of the body to address the issues effectively in a democratic ways. Peace is the ultimate goal of life and the UNO was made for this noble cause.

India will very soon become the member of security council.

Hey! Welcome again. Here in this topic we shall try to know how India can be the member of United Nations security council. The efforts India has been pushing for decades turned down by invoking veto. India, a big contender, has been pushing it's demand for making alternation in the structure of UNSC. But the deterrent China bringing impediments in the way make India cry.  India has made remarkable progress in all sectors and has also strengthened it's foreign policy than ever. India is the biggest trade partner of China followed by the US.  The recent developments took place in the interests of India shocked many when India became the member of MTCR in 2016 supported by G7. China had nothing to say about this development. In 2019, when the article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir was scrapped, that time China had nothing to say. In 2021, when UNO desinated Masood Azhar as a global terrorist list, China not invoked veto and passed any comments.  In 2024 S...
