Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi was on Friday arrested by a team of Enforcement Directorate, ED. Delhi High court rejects the pleas for granting protection from the probe agency to Kejriwal. He was arrested in a Delhi Liquor Policy case, has become the second chief minister to be arrested while still in office, after Jayalalithaa.
What is Delhi Liquor Policy?
The Delhi Liquor Policy was introduced in November 2021 by Arvind Kejriwal government without getting nod from the LG of Delhi.
Any policy in a Delhi firstly get approved by the cabinet and is tabled on LG, but the new liquor case didn't in accordance with the rules.
The new law allows private entities to get licence on lottery basis from the Kejriwal government. Earlier the liquor shops were owned by government itself.
What was the aim of the new liquor policy?
The new liquor policy is aimed to end blackmarketing of liquor Mafia, to increase revenue and reform consumer experience and to ensure equal distribution of liquor shops.
The new liquor policy allowed private shop owners to inflict MRP of liquor. It results in increasing revenue by 27 percent in 2921-22.
What are allegations made upon Delhi government?
The new liquor policy violates Delhi excise fees act 2010 and business transaction 1993. It is said that the new law benefits private liquor shops due to given power of ceiling of prices of liquor and damaged huge losses to the state of Delhi.
