You wonder to know that the advent of humans on the earth was about 380 crore years ago and 250-300 crore years ago of photosynthesis. At the initial stage there was less oxygen on our earth, but one of the main causes of increasing oxygen was Photosynthesis. Algae was come in about 300 crore years ago, followed by unicellular and multicellular species.

India comes in the list of World's top 12 bio-diversities. And India is very fortunate to have all kinds of vegetation found here - Tropical rainy, deciduous, Temperate evergreen, deciduous, thorny bushes, Tundra, Alpine and mangroves.
India ranks 10th in terms of vegetation and 4th in the Asia. Here total 15 thousands types of flowers are grown here which accounts for 6% in the world.
Role of Medicinal plants in the health sector.
As we know, people of ancient times used herbal plants in their medical treatment. A detailed account of this knowledge can be traced back to 'Charak Sahita', an old grantha or book, where a varieties of medicines developed with the help of plants only.
Feeling ashamed to see the Europeans are using our ancient medicinal legacy in their profession by claiming their exclusive rights on them by making them patent.
Role of plants in manufacturing
Forest based industries procure their raw-materials from forests. Since forest is renewable resource, helping in economy. Rubber industries, paper industries, cotton textile industries are the best examples that outlines the importance of plants used for manufacturing. So the latex or sap, wood pulp or cotton balls, all are obtained from plants.
Some sacred groves - a wealth of diverse and rare species.
you might be surprised to know that there are dozens of plants species that are used as sacred purposes : marriages, festivals and cultural events, etc. And here we shall see how these plants are intertwined with our culture and day to day phenomenon of our lives.
you might have observed the use of tamarind and the use of mango leaf during marriages. It is very prevalent in North India and Bihar where i hail from. Other sacred groves are tulsi, kadam, neem, peepal, etc.
Nation and states use national symbols, invoked from some specific plants
State use plants as symbols to represent their identity and culture and promote environmental awareness. As we know plants vary from place to place depends upon several factors - climate, soil, water, topography, rainfall, etc. Peepal tree is the symbol associated with Gautam Buddha who got enlightenment sitting near it.
Similarly the Ashoka tree's name comes sanskrit word and literally means 'sorrow -less'. In concise these plants are associated with our culture, traditions and have a deep roots inside our vedic texts.

So here we have arrived at a conclusion that plants are more than greenery. We depends on plants and vice-versa. It has potential to help all kind of species including human being to help them from all sides. Not only providing a variety of food stuffs to sustain life, but also making a significant role in the national growth.
