The Cripps Mission formed by the War committee of Britain under the leadership of Sir Stafford Cripps. The report came in India in March 1942 with the objectives to gain support of India in the second world War and proposed a framework for a constitutional future. Mahatma Gandhi called it a "post dated cheque" , because of it's uncertainty.
The major points of the report are.
1. India would be made dominion status. And India could give up commonwealth, if it wished.
2. Members for the constituent assembly would be elected by the provincial legislature and nominated by princely states.
3. Provinces could opt out: It means provinces were given choices to opt out or make their own constitution.
4. Safeguarding of minorities would be ensured.
5. During war, military and defence would come under British government.
Indian national congress's rejection
Because this report didn't say about immediate transfer of power in the hand of Indian. It was a vague offer presented by British, therefore Gandhiji called it a "Post dated cheque ".
Provinces were given choices to opt out feared Congress about partition of India.
Muslim League rejected it.
Muslim League sought for Pakistan but it's demand ignored in the report. League felt in the making of constitution, Congress would have domination.
