International day for the elimination of violence against women # orange the world #UNGA #NCRB #spotlight initiative
The date to observe international day for the elimination of violence against women set by UNGA in 1993. It is gender based violence that results in physical sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women including threats, etc .
Rights activist have observed 25th November as a day against gender based violence since 1981 this date was selected to honour the Mirabelle sisters, 3 political activists from the Dominican republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by the order of the country's ruler.
According to NCRB, National crime report bureau , functions under Home ministry of India , the total 371503 cases against women were reported across the country in comparison to 405325 in 2019.
Uttar Pradesh topped the list followed by West Bengal, Rajasthan ,Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
Crimes includes cases of rape, outraging modesty, dowry deaths and harassment acid attacks and kidnapping.
Majority of cases under crime against women were registered under cruelty by husband or his relatives 30.2 % followed by assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty 19.7% , kidnapping and abduction of women 19% and rape 7.2%.
Taking a stand against gender based violence violence remains a pervasive problem worldwide. Another bold step in the right direction was embodied by an initiative launched in 2008 and known as the UNiTE to end the violence against women.It aims to raise public awareness and to increase policy making and resources.
In 2017 the European union and UN launched the spotlight initiative which aims to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls by raising the awareness of this issue in the line with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.
