Recently, Interpol rejected India's request to issue a red corner notice against the khalistani leader Gurupatwant Singh Pannun, a seperatist.
Who is Gurupatwant Singh Pannun?
He belongs from Amritsar, has completed his graduation in Law from the Punjab University, did master degree in Newyork and MBA degree from Hartford University. He joined khalistani movement and later formed the Sikhs For Justice in America.
It is a seperatist organization, aimed to make a separate country named Khalistan, bifurcated from India.
Indian government has already banned this group under Unlawful Activity Prevention Law, UAPA. It has a website, advocates the rights of self-decision of Sikhs. And to form a separate country named Khalistan.
This demand is completely rejected because it undermine the sovereignty of India.
Why India demanded Red corner notice?
A notice was issued by NIA in 2021, May. CBI says, Pannun engaged in separatism, terrorism and other unlawful activities through social media.
Apart from it, he is accused of murdering of Indian leaders, damaging public properties and spread violence.
Pannun is one of the 38 terrorists under UAPA. His name is involved in more than 22 cases in Punjab and other cases in Delhi, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
On 15 April 2022, Pannun urged Sikhs to unfurl khalistani flag, especially at the public properties and distributed gifts in return.
Why the demand was rejected?
Interpol considers, Pannun a high profile Sikh seperatist leader and the Sikh for Justice SFJ, is a group demanding an independent Khalistan. His activities show a political dimension.
According to Article 3 of the Interpol deter any action against the activities of political groups, defence, religious matters, creeds. Therefore, Interpol rejected the demand.
Interpol termed India's UAPA a complex and have loopholes itself. And this UAPA is being misused.
What is Interpol?
It was formed in 1923, by the name of ICPC and renamed Interpol in 1956. It is headquartered in Lyon, France. India become it's member in 1949.
India's National Crime Bureau has been nominated as a partnered agent, which works with the help of CBI of India. It means both Interpol and CBI work together.
Operation Megh Chakra and Operation Garur were launched by CBI in collaboration with Interpol and have succeeded.
