Today 8- April is marked as the death anniversary of our freedom fighter, Mangal Pandey who strongly opposed the British policies of discrimination. He is remembered as the Indian hero who vehemently opposed and stood against the British, his acts fuelled a feeling of nationalism in the minds of Indians. He is an exemplary of courage and dedication. The Revolt of 1857 is also called "The first War of Independence" and "Sipoy Revolt", paved the way for Independence.
He was born on 19, July 1827 in a high class Brahaman family. In 1849, Mangal Pandey joined the Army of British East India Company and become the part of 34th Bengal Native Infantary Regiment in Barrackpor.In days, the use of Enfield Riffle become a burning issue or you can say the immediate cause the led to the outbreak of the Revolt 1857. The cartage of this gun was made of the grease of cow and pig, so Indian soldiers denied to use this riffle. Mangal Pandey was also accused of making group of like minded soldiers who could resist the use of this riffle.
He attacked on British officials and tried to shot himself but not succeed, the British arrested him and invoked Court Martial on him. The prosecution started fast, and he was hanged to death on 8-April before the scheduled date of 18-April, in the wake of revolt. After the death, in May soldiers of Meerut went on to strike against the use of this riffle, they stormed the Meerut jail on 10 May and released prisioners and walked for Delhi which is around 60 km from Meerut.
To mark the respect for his contributions, Indian government issued a stamp ticket on his name in 1984.
